However, with the right solution, they too can make huge gains in efficiency. This is demonstrated by a cooperation project between Wassermann Technologie, the general contractor Rink and the machine manufacturer Grob for the four-person company Fertigungstechnik Scheld.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Fertigungstechnik Scheld from Gladenbach-Mornshausen in Hesse has recently started working at night. However, the lights in production remain off because the night shift runs unmanned. This is precisely the special feature. Scheld is small and yet it has automated. In addition to the new, fully automated machining center, there is only one other machine in production. However, this only runs during the day shift.     <\/p>\n\n<p>In addition to Managing Director J\u00fcrgen Scheld, there are three other employees. Fertigungstechnik Scheld therefore means: a small workforce, great expertise, a lot to do and hardly any room for improvement in terms of quantities. The company manufactures for automotive suppliers, mechanical engineering, pharmaceutical and medical technology. Prototypes, small series and repeat parts are produced for mold making, model and gauge construction. The materials: aluminum, brass, copper, steel and plastic.    <\/p>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"block-65af8ed325b48\"  class=\"headline_icon wassermann_block\">\r\n  <div class=\"noborder\">\r\n        <h2 class=\"custom_headline h2\" class=\"custom_headline h2\" id=\"small-company-big-pressure\" class=\"custom_headline h2\" class=\"custom_headline h2\" id=\"small-company-big-pressure\">\r\n              <span class=\"headline\">Small company &#8211; big pressure<\/span>\r\n                <\/h2>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n<p>Scheld is a typical, well-established small company, but it is feeling the pressure of competition. One day it was clear: Scheld had to secure its competitiveness. &#8220;For us, it meant reducing machine costs and increasing machine availability. The spindles had to have more operating time than before,&#8221; says J\u00fcrgen Scheld, explaining the initial situation.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Ultimately, there were only two options. The first was to increase the number of staff in order to be able to run a second or even third shift. Or automate to make further shifts possible unmanned.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The company has opted for automation. &#8220;Skilled workers are becoming increasingly difficult to find. In addition, many machinists want to qualify as technicians after a few years in production and prefer to work in work preparation or production control,&#8221; emphasizes J\u00fcrgen Scheld. He parted with two of his three machining centers and bought a new five-axis Grob G 350a from the Access series in order to expand it into a fully automated solution. The machine was to be supplemented with a pallet storage system and a workpiece feeder.   <\/p>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"block-65af8ed325b5e\"  class=\"headline_icon wassermann_block\">\r\n  <div class=\"noborder\">\r\n        <h2 class=\"custom_headline h2\" class=\"custom_headline h2\" id=\"cooperation-between-automation-specialists-and-machine-manufacturers\">\r\n              <span class=\"headline\">Cooperation between automation specialists and machine manufacturers<\/span>\r\n                <\/h2>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n<p>An hour and a half&#8217;s drive from Gladenbach-Mornshausen, just beyond Fulda, lies the town of Eichenzell, the home of Wassermann Technologie GmbH. Automation issues like Scheld&#8217;s are welcome there. &#8220;We develop automation solutions for many industries and have also been active in the automation of machine tools for over 20 years,&#8221; says Managing Director Sebastian Wassermann. &#8220;With our pallet terminal for workpieces, we have a flexible solution that can be customized and connected to any standard CNC machine.&#8221;   <\/p>\n\n<p>The pallet storage system configured for Scheld has a capacity of 44 pallets, distributed over six levels, the heights of which can be variably set. The pallet size is 400 mm x 400 mm and with a footprint of 2.87 m x 3.97 m, the storage system is very compact. It has a main time parallel ergonomic set-up station and is controlled by a Beckhoff Twincat 3 PLC.  <\/p>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"block-65af8ed325b71\"  class=\"headline_icon wassermann_block\">\r\n  <div class=\"noborder\">\r\n        <h2 class=\"custom_headline h2\" class=\"custom_headline h2\" id=\"compatible-at-all-levels\">\r\n              <span class=\"headline\">Compatible at all levels<\/span>\r\n                <\/h2>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n<p>Adapting the storage system requires one thing above all: making interfaces compatible. On the one hand, on a mechanical level, so that the feeding and removal of the pallets is precise and reliable. On the other hand, the software interfaces of the pallet terminal and the CNC machine must be connected to the control system of the host computer &#8211; in this case to the flexible EMS control technology from Procam.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The two manufacturers and Rink Werkzeugmaschinen worked closely together on the mechanical connection of the terminal to the Grob G 350a. &#8220;In this case, we adapted our terminal to the new Grob Access series for the first time. Thanks to the close cooperation with Grob and Rink Werkzeugmaschinen, it was possible to connect the new machine type quickly and easily,&#8221; reports Wassermann. Once the technical adaptations had been completed, Rink Werkzeugmaschinen and Wassermann Technologie also took over the installation and commissioning of the new stand-alone solution at the customer&#8217;s premises.  <\/p>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"block-65af8ed325b85\"  class=\"headline_icon wassermann_block\">\r\n  <div class=\"noborder\">\r\n        <h2 class=\"custom_headline h2\" class=\"custom_headline h2\" id=\"spindle-hours-and-throughput-almost-doubled\">\r\n              <span class=\"headline\">Spindle hours and throughput almost doubled<\/span>\r\n                <\/h2>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n<p>For Fertigungstechnik Scheld, the new automation solution offers clear, measurable advantages. The production output of the new machine is higher than that of the two replaced machines combined &#8211; primarily due to the automation. In order to exploit the potential, the clamping towers and pyramids from Triag International were selected as clamping devices, as they allow several workpieces to be clamped on one pallet. With this combination of automation and clamping equipment, the spindle hours could be at least doubled. In addition, Scheld still has a lot of productive scope upwards, as the Wassermann Terminal tool storage system offers a high maximum transfer weight of 400 kg.    <\/p>\n\r\n\r\n<div id=\"block-65af8ed325b98\"  class=\"headline_icon wassermann_block\">\r\n  <div class=\"noborder\">\r\n        <h2 class=\"custom_headline h2\" class=\"custom_headline h2\" id=\"all-goals-achieved-thanks-to-automation\">\r\n              <span class=\"headline\">All goals achieved thanks to automation<\/span>\r\n                <\/h2>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n<p>Fertigungstechnik Scheld can now significantly increase throughput. &#8220;We are able to realize about twice the order volume. What&#8217;s more, this solution fits perfectly into our production portfolio. At night we produce repeat parts unmanned &#8211; from batch size 1, by the way &#8211; and during the day we concentrate on prototypes,&#8221; says J\u00fcrgen Scheld, giving an insight into the increase in productivity and the new production scenario.
